We’re Gonna Miss You All!

We’re Gonna Miss You All!

2016 started out rough.

While other celebrities died before him…….the entertainment and arts world was rocked by the unsuspecting death of David Bowie.  I can distinctly remembering that January 10th.  I was and still am in a bit of shock!  I didn’t always understand or like David’s every song…..but I there’s plenty of my favorites in there.  His avant-garde approach and pioneering approach still has me in awe.

That didn’t have much time to  linger…..David’s death.

Glenn Frey!!!!   January 17th!!!  Oh my gosh!!!!!  I still tear up over this one.  Saying Glenn Frey died was some of the hardest words to every roll off my tongue.  His music framed some of the more important days and dates in my life.  The music of The Eagles was so woven into the fabric of society during the 70’s.  Girls!!!  Many a time making out to an Eagles song.  Thanks so very much Glenn.  Miss you…….

Between David and Glenn…..a favorite actor.  At the time I remember thinking “what’s up with Alan Rickman?”  I always love the characters he portrayed.  January 14th gave me an update on his going ons as he died!!!  This was quick.  2 people that provided extraordinary entertainment opportunities had suddenly departed!!  Without warning of any illness. Gone!

January 26th ‘Fish’ died.  One of my all time favorite comedies, Barney Miller.  Abe Vigoda played the expressionless detective Fish.  I still smile thinking of this movie.  Lots of talent in the one show.

I loved Jefferson Airplanes’ music…later to be known as Jefferson Starship, the San Francisco Sound.  January 28th saw us saying good bye to Paul Kanter guitarist and founding member.

Maurice White!!!!  EARTH, WIND, AND FIRE!!!!   Oh my!!!  February 4th….  That funky sound. Who didn’t love him and Phillip Bailey!

Always a good laugh…..”The Naked Gun” Movies, “Airplane” Movies! Loved ’em!!! Yeah Leslie Nielsen was the featured bumbling character……but right there with a straight line and good timing was George Kennedy. February 28th was his exit date. There just seems to be certain people that should be those standard characters in movies that are charismatic but complementary to the star, that was George Kennedy.

We’re gonna miss you all

This was unfortunately expected…..  Sadly it was a death watch.  Joey Feek.  The pretty and feminine side of Joey and Rory. She left us at a young age of 40. A victim of cervical cancer.  March 4.

Sir George Martin, Producer for the “Beatles” albums, known as “The Fifth Beatle” – age 90!!  I’m listening to Abby Road…..totally amazed at the production work this man sculpted.  Yeah, there’s considerable age between he and I but I felt old at his passing.  March 8th.

Keith Emerson.  Emerson, Lake, and Palmer.  Unexpected yeah, but there was more unfortunate news to come from E,L & P later on. Keyboardist supreme!  March 11 he decided ……enough!

James Garner’s Rockford Files was one of my favorite 70’s shows.  Joe Santos, Actor – Lieutenant Dennis Becker on The Rockford Files (1974-1980) – age 84

We’re gonna miss you all….

April 6!  Yeah, he had been ill recent to that date, but he just seemed a bit indestructible!!  Merle Haggard!  The Original ‘Outlaw’!!  He took Country music in a fresh and wild direction.  79 years old!!  He just didn’t seem to be that old.  Only recently a recipient of The Kennedy Center Award Honoree.  I still think he still had a lot of music left in him.

April 25th, my breath was taken away.  And so was the enigmatic Prince.  UNBELIEVABLE!!!!  I couldn’t fathom this one!  Younger than me……  I had just right before then watched him play a unforgettable guitar solo for “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” during a concert honoring George Harrison!  Floored me!!! Complete AWE!!!

Charisma and character personified……Cassius Clay.  A young black boxer with skills yet to have been dealt with.  Witty. Handsome. Boisterous. Funny. Fast. POWERFUL!  He’s ‘float like a butterfly and sting like a bee’. Most know his as Muhammed Ali. He graced the face of this earth as an ambassador of peace and enlightenment after his retirement until June 3rd.  No one like him had come before……no one is likely to come after.

August 6,  Pete Fountain, Jazz Musician – played with both Al Hirt and Lawrence Welk – age 86  Dixieland Jazz.  Pete hailed from New Orleans, Louisiana and was a staple music item in the life of this young Louisiana lad.

August 29th was a biggie!!!  Some people you think would be with us forever.  Gene Wilder was one of them…..it’s really hard to pick a favorite of all his movies.

We’re gonna miss you all……

September 25 – Arnold Palmer, Golfer – One of the greatest golfers ever, did more to popularize the sport than any other golfer – age 87.  A gentleman.  He graced our lives on a green carpet for so long that it seems odd that he’s gone.

October 24 – Bobby Vee, Singer – “Take Good Care of My Baby”, “The Night Has a Thousand Eyes” – age 73.  A 60’s teen idol.  A hard working pop singer that rings thru time over those AM waves!

On November 7th it seemed the world stopped turning for a moment.  Leonard Cohen poet/songwriter.  It just didn’t seem like things were right.  A world without Leonard Cohen.  The world was truly a better place with him in it.

Hot on the heels of the loss of Leonard Cohen comes Leon Russell!!!  At his height I was a freshman at LSU wasting a lot of life but when a song any song that Leon was playing, singing, producing I knew I was hearing  something like no other.  November 13.  He and Elton John did a CD together not too long before.  Quirky but remarkable talent.

November 15 – Holly Dunn, C&W Singer / Songwriter – “Are You Ever Gonna Love Me” and “You Really Had Me Going” – age 59. Too young.

You never know what and who you’ll miss until they are gone…… miss you all

Everybody’s mom it seem to be.  November 24 – Florence Henderson, Actress / Singer – Carol Brady on “The Brady Bunch” (1969 to 1974) – age 82.  Who could forget her effervescent performance that really made the  Brady Bunch…..

November 25 – Ron Glass, Actor – Det. Ron Harris on “Barney Miller” (1975-1982) – age 71.  I loved this comedy!!!  He joined Abe Vigoda as detectives in heaven.  Abe left us earlier in the year.

December 7th reunites 2 of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer.  Greg Lake passes to the other side to join his bandmate who left us earlier.  Truly there has to be a rock-n-roll time on the other side somewhere!!!

John Glenn, WWII & Korean War Fighter Pilot. Marine Colonel. NASA Astronaut. Senator from Ohio (1974-99). Married for 73 yrs – first American to orbit the Earth (1962) – age 95 A hero to me…..and most every kid back in the early to mid 60’s!!!  December 8th back to a celestial realm.

Some people never seem to age…..he, to me had that Dick Clark air about him……..handsome and ageless.  December 13 we said good bye to Alan Thicke, Actor – Jason Seaver, the father on “Growing Pains” (1985-’92) – age 69.

In a way, it’s rather tough reliving some of these….  We’re gonna miss you all….

December 18 – Zsa Zsa Gabor, Hungarian Actress and Socialite – Moulin Rouge (1952), married nine times to mostly wealthy men – age 99.  One of those prominent tabloid stars of the early days.

The year is almost over…..enough!  The above is just really a synopsis.  There’s much more that I didn’t mention…..but not forgotten.

This day……was a strange passing.  Not even on the radar.  December 25 – George Michael, Singer/Songwriter – #1 hits; “Faith”, “I Want Your Sex”, “Careless Whisper” – age 53.  WHAM!!!!  So darn YOUNG!!!  So HANDOME!!!  Always looked forward to what was next!!!  There’s a bit of an incomplete expectation lingering over this one.  What a voice!!!

BANG!!!!  NO!!!!  27th December – Carrie Fisher, Actress – Princess Leia in “Star Wars” (1977) and four sequels – age 60!!!!  60 years old!!!!  A heart attack!!!  But what a full life she lived.

I had to amend this before publishing this morning……..  December 28–Debbie Reynolds, 84 years old actress and singer divorced from singer Eddie Fisher and mother of Carrie Fisher dies one day after of her daughter. Debbie starred in the classic “Singing In The Rain”.

There’s more by the way, I just couldn’t put them all here. But these all had their moments in my life.

There’s 1 more days left to this year.  I hope I don’t have to amend this posting!!!!  I did!!

Show 2016 the door please.

We’re gonna miss you all……

Peace, love, and beaches,

John
