The First Step Is Always The Hardest…..

The First Step Is Always The Hardest…..

The First Step Is Always The Hardest….. Poppycock!

I’m always doing something even if that something is nothing.  Hehehehehe.  And that’s taken some getting used to, honestly.

Have you ever thought of why we do the things we do?

Up until recently I’d have to say on my behalf……’No’.

I’d just do.  No reason other than possibly because I thought it was something I was supposed to do.  Perhaps something I was trained to do throughout life.

Maybe I’d think that I have to do something or else something bad was gonna happen.  Like work….if I didn’t work I’d lose my house and car, and so on.  Nothing that I’d dwell on.  Just something I was told.  No work, no play sort of thing.

So, there’s a reason for bringing this on this morning.

And here’s the catalyst.

I was making a morning post on Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/johngaudet333 with one of my pics from https://www.facebook.com/peaceloveandbeaches/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel  looking for something unusual to say…  I came up with, “Why does the first step have to be the hardest?”.  With a pic of some steps leading into the beautiful Caribbean.

That got me to thinking……   How often does some quote dictate our doing or not doing?

“The first step is always the hardest.”  Lousy ass quote!  The first step isn’t the hardest step, the hardest step is down the path……unseen and unknown.  It’ll challenge our intellect, purpose, fortitude and maybe our well being.  Not taking that first step is merely a mistake.

I recently climbed up the side on Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica.  I assure you, the first step wasn’t the hardest.  I’m recalling it was the easiest. The unseen to come was the hardest…..walking up a steep incline of rocky steps carved years and years ago.  That was hard.

The First Step Is Always The Hardest…..

What endears us to such a quote?  Does it make us feel good about not doing what we want to do?  Is it the excuse we need to not do what we want to do?  Does it make us feel philosophical?  Worst yet does it form a philosophy that we follow?

Maybe it’s the personality of the person that delivers that first step crap that endears of to this philosophy!!!

Nothing beats doing…..  I once read an interview of Paul McCartney where the interviewer was reading off all the accomplishments that were awarded him, quite awesome I might say.  Paul’s response was that he didn’t know some of the stuff……  Why?  Because he was too busy doing the stuff he said!

That is where we should be living our lives!!  Doing the stuff we want to do!  Leave the philosophy shit to the wanna be’s.

Get to doing!

Speaking of doing…..   Why do we do things we don’t want to do?  Don’t fall prey to another philosophical quote.  If we’ve got to do ‘something’, that ‘something’ should be what we want to do.

But wait……that’s too simple.  It’s too simple for my complicated life!  And the reason why it’s a complicated life is because you didn’t do the simple thing…..’do what you want to do’.  I know this first hand because I fell prey of it…..but no longer.

The First Step Is Always The Hardest…..

Sometimes what I want to do is nothing.  And that is hard to do!  Why?  I’m trained to believe, that if I’m not doing something, I’m lazy, I’m a derelict, irresponsible……worthless.

Poppycock!!

Doing nothing is doing something and I’m doing a lot of nothing!!

The first step wasn’t too hard…..it was down the path that I began to stumble.  But not any longer!  I’ve written myself a ‘new’ philosophy.  And I’m just living it!!  I don’t feel irresponsible.  I’m enjoying doing whatever it is I’m doing at the moment I’m doing it and while I’m in the throes of doing it there’s no time for contemplation of something else.  All that exists is the moment and that’s where I choose to live.

The first step is not the hardest!  That comes later!  Don’t cheat yourself, do it!  Even if it’s ‘nothing’.

Peace, love, and beaches,

John
