Playa del Carmen’s 5th Avenue

Playa del Carmen’s 5th Avenue

5th Avenue.  When I hear of this location my mind always goes to New York City….and it’s world famous 5th Avenue serving the world’s elite.

But there’s another located far from New York City.  You’ll trade a blustery chilly wind for an embracing Caribbean breeze.  That’s not bad.

You won’t see much of ‘elite’ society there either.  It’s a tourist mecca steps away from the inviting blue Caribbean.

Speaking of inviting…..that’s what you’ll get walking down 5th Avenue.  Each street vendor and shop is anxious to show you the plenty of their business.  I even had one character recommend his shop as a good place to waste my money.  Seriously.

What do you want?  Food, silver, gold (not too much gold here), shirts, novelty gifts, medicines, time-share condo sales?  There’s an ‘Old Navy’ at the south end and directly across is a Krispy Kreme donuts shop……for real!

At the south end is where the ferries to Cozumel are located……so there’s lots of activity there.  There are 3 ferry boat companies to choose from for the same price.  Collusion?  But, it’s up to the street people to convince you to ride theirs…..the next person after that is gonna be selling tourist trips on the island and Jeep rentals.

Somebody, somewhere along 5th Avenue is aggressively seeking your money.

There are some unique shops with unique gifts.  They probably would have more traffic in their shops if they weren’t so adamant about you giving them your money.

Let me talk about food for a little while.  There seem to be countless restaurants along both sides of 5th Avenue.  World Famous too!!!  Guy Fieri http://www.guyfieri.com has a place that just recently opened there (he also has one in the Cancun airport) that seems to stay pretty busy.  I haven’t eaten there yet, but I hear good things.  I believe he did a cooking show from there……

Back to food.  I’ve eaten along 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen and I’ve eaten off 5th Avenue.  For me, I look the food best off the avenue…….I like the authentic flavor of Mexico.  5th Avenue doesn’t really have that for me.  I’ve eaten at the small and medium size places and I’m still going off the avenue for the taste of Mexico.

Don’t get me wrong Señor Frog’s has some great food and some great prices.  Señor Frog’s is located right next to the ferry dock, gets you coming and going. And if by some weird chance you don’t try it there, there’s another one in Cozumel.

There are a number of restaurants that serve upscale fare…….not for me, I’m in Mexico.

There is one place I like to revisit though…..’The Tequila Barrel’ and it’s not for the tequila, well it is in a way. But, I like the atmosphere there.  Actually reminds me of places back in the states…….I’m thinking ‘Hooters’. Nice ladies in nice shorts…..etc.  Good service too.

Plus you can have your own personal labeled tequila bottle!!  This is the next best tequila brand on the market!!  Coming up!

That’s the way it’s done. That’s 5th Avenue.

There is also 2 nice malls put together rather creatively.  One outdoor…..its like walking thru a cavern with businesses towering over you and there’s an aquarium there too!  Then there’s a spectacular indoor mall.  I like both.  Here’s from in front of the aquarium…I love this!

5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen is an interesting animal.  It’s like a carnival!  That’s it, a carnival.  It’s fun the first time……but it will drain you.  And the subsequent visits are even more draining.  I mostly go when there are visitors in the area, for their experience.  Me, I’d prefer the beach…..with an ice cold beer.  But, that’s just me.

An upside on shopping in Playa del Carmen is there are 4 shopping malls (one having a Sears store in it), a Sam’s Wholesale, 2 Walmarts, and a Home Depot.  This allows for some of the comforts of the U.S. And I use these quite often.  The Mall of The America’s is no different than shopping in a mall in the U.S., it has some of the same stores that any mall has;  Claire Marie, Footlocker, Wet Seal, Chico’s, Sunglass Hut, etc.

I feel like……shopping.

Peace, love, and beaches,

John
